This field course investigates the tectonic and sedimentary history of the Neuqúen Basin in the southern transition between the broken foreland and the contiguous foreland basin. The emphasis will be on basin histories from extension to contractional reactivation and associated changes in erosion, sedimentation, and the influence of volcanism on sedimentation histories, involving changes between silicoclastic, calcareous, and evaporitic systems. The principal fault systems, sedimentary environments, and surface processes will be discussed in the context of available seismic reflection lines and other subsurface information.
